Whether you’re welcoming a new Year 10 Eduqas GCSE Music group, starting at a new school, or introducing students to the Eduqas specification for the first time, the Musical Contexts Pre‑GCSE Music Baseline Test is the ideal first‑lesson (or second‑lesson) resource.
Overview
This 45‑minute, in‑class baseline test helps you:
Assess what students can already hear and understand.
Record their musical background and experience.
Introduce the structure and expectations of the Eduqas GCSE Music course.
How to Run the Test
Print one A3 double‑sided student booklet per pupil.
Play the listening recording once from start to finish.
Collect and mark the papers using the teacher pack.
That’s the entire procedure. The recording runs independently for the full 45 minutes — welcoming the class, giving all instructions, announcing each question, playing each extract the correct number of times, timing pauses, giving a five‑minute warning, and closing the test.
Structure and Marking
The test totals 50 marks (easily converted to a percentage) and is divided into four sections:
- Section A - Listening (26 marks) features multiple-choice listening questions on Toto: "Africa" (AoS4) and J. S. Bach: "Badinerie" (AoS1) as well as Film Music (AoS3) and Music for Ensemble (AoS2) so all four areas of study are immediately introduced.
- Section B - Musical Knowledge (14 marks) questions testing students musical knowledge and understanding up to ABRSM Theory Grade 3 standard.
- Section C - Your Musical Journey (not marked) Use it to record, per student: instruments and level, lessons in/out of school, graded exams (ABRSM, Trinity etc.), ensembles, notation-reading confidence, software experience and musical goals. Flag any student who reports strong prior musical training for stretch work.
- Section D - About the Eduqas GCSE Music Course (10 marks) provides information about the Eduqas GCSE Music course structure and pupils answer simple questions to test understanding."
